Nearly 137 years ago an architect named Antoni
Gaudi had a vision “sagrada familia” and 137 years later with its architect
buried in it, the vision of his is still taking shape and has earned this
incomplete masterpiece the tag “unfinished” and who would have thought that century
later the Architecture and Design industry would evolve so much that a style
would be created, taking cues from old factories and industrial spaces to give
that exact unfinished feel to the space and become a rage among the industry.
‘There is beauty in being raw’ must have been the
thought behind which this design was based on and it is evident too. The
weathered wood, exposed brick, rusty metals all add some sort of magic to any space.
This style helps in displaying the natural texture of any material at its best
which is complemented with a neutral color palette making any space come alive.
There are always two extremes in any case and it is hard to find the balance
and strike the right chord and in that case the industrial styles strikes it
real hard with its choice of neutral palette which helps in emphasizing the
outlook of the style and enhancing the interior.
How many times have you strolled around an old
structure and be mesmerized. There is a sense of charm and elegance in those
dilapidated structures of old monuments and structures. The ruined state of
these structures speaks for the times of adventure, hardships it has gone
through over time and that’s what makes it special. Grey hair, wrinkles adds an
element of unconventional beauty to any person the same way an unfinished wall
does to any space. Every person has a unique personality which often gets
buried under multiple shields or barriers, only when these barriers get down
the real you could shine and likewise below all the coatings of paint and laminates
lies rusty and raggedy structures which doesn’t need polishing but brings out
the best of a space in its rawest glory. The splendid architecture of the
Mahaballipuram or the Brihadeeshwara temple is brought out best with the
materials’ true and natural texture.

Anything against nature is an offense is what the
saying is although we add so much artificiality to a design that its
originality is lost and it becomes just another piece rather than staying true
to what it is. The best thing about letting something stay true and natural is allowing
it to stay one of a kind. Over time the admiration towards natural products is deteriorating
whilst the usage of imitation products is high. Industries, ware houses and
inventories holds a lot of mystery and allure whose appeal when transformed into
an interior transcends the same kind of feel and expression.
Money, time, labor all of these are saved and
charm is restored when you prefer raw elegance. Design generally can’t afford
imperfections, mistakes, ruins and rust but what if these very same elements
make up a design. We put in so much effort to cover up all the imperfections,
flaws and turn it to something else but these are the factors that build a
personality a character into a space. Rusty around the edges doesn’t always
have to mean something negative. Flawless beauty is a myth but this flawed
beauty of the Industrial style is charismatic. Eliminating all the cost
building factors like paint, laminates and etcetera not only helps in the cost
cutting factors but also in terms of maintenance in the long-run. There are
various ways through which you could bring in the essence of this style into a
space.
“Be original copies fade too fast” this is more
than apt in cases of design and architecture no matter how much you try to
conceal something sooner or later it is going to fade out and that is why it is
smart to go with its natural elements. Worn out, ruins, antique, old, all these
terms make up for a beautiful space if used and utilized right all you need is
a little planning and ideation. We try so hard to create interesting spaces in
interiors but often we forget that ‘less in more’. No amount of art or
ornamentation would ever be able to match the look of a bare concrete wall to
create a statement.

There are multiple ways to fetch the essence of
this style into any interior. The choice of a bare concrete wall with a
textured finish, using a sand paper, as the backdrop to your gorgeous piece of
furniture creates a striking statement. And sometimes even scraping off the cement
layer leaves the beautiful layer of brick exposed which blends a little bit of
country style with the industry style and helps in augmenting the design
perspective of an interior. You take any space it contains all sorts of design elements
with the right eye we would be able to bring them out in the best way possible
like instead of preferring false ceilings you could make an unconventional
choice of exposed ceiling or true ceiling, which happens to be a famous choice
among retail spaces, and they aptly complement the other elements of this
design. One might find the plumbing lines or electrical lines a little turning
off but those are the essentials. Metals are the second major element of this
style. The worst thing about the metals are their rusty nature but that becomes
their best trait when utilized in this particular interior design style. Industrial
style lighting fixtures are one of the best type of lighting fixtures available
with their filament bulbs, black metal finish, warm lighting they bring back
the vintage element in a more stylish way.
An exposed brick wall brings a lot of character
into a space than any amount of paint could ever do. Not many of us got over
the ‘Alaipayuthey’ apartment shown through the lens of P C Sreeram. Although
there are various styles and themes of design, the best part about the
industrial design style is that it lets the materials be itself and brings out
the truest essence and soul of a material which in turn helps the interior gain
character and style and shine in its rawest glory.
